This week’s chart, which takes data from the Cambashi Country Observatory, shows the market size of Technical Application software (BIM, CAD, CAM, CAE, GIS, PLM, Visualization tools) by software segment (AEC, MFG, OTH, GIS, VIZ).

The Baltics is not one country
The Baltics is a group of 3 former Soviet Union countries that border the Baltic Sea in North-East Europe. As they are much smaller than their neighbours – Russia, Poland and Belarus – it would be easy to think of them as one homogenous group.
The chart above shows the market size for each of the countries. The AEC software market is mainly BIM Design tools; the MFG market is mainly PLM tools; VIZ is design visualization tools; OTH are other design tools.
At first sight, the 3 countries are quite similar, but there are important differences:
- Latvia and Lithuania buy more BIM Design tools;
- Estonia and Lithuania buy more PLM tools;
- Latvia buys the most GIS tools, whilst Estonia buys much less GIS than the other countries.
Why is this important?
For anyone wanting to plan their marketing activities in the Baltics, it would be wise not to treat them all the same. Priorities should be different in each country.

The Observatories
The Cambashi Market Observatories are a set of consistent and multi-perspective datasets for the technical software market. They provide detailed information on software spend by country, industry and product and the size of user communities, for a range of technical software application types, including:
- CAD, CAM, CAE
- PLM
- BIM
- AEC
- GIS
- IoT (software development tools)
Each data set provides a different way of measuring the use of software in industry, and can be used in combination to support business planning at global, regional and local levels. The methodology combines public and 3rd party data sources with Cambashi’s quantitative and qualitative research in each of these market views. Developed over 25 years, the combination of top down macroeconomic, industry detail and bottom up supply side (software provider) views leads to a highly consistent, multi-granular view of the market.
The Cambashi Country Observatory (spending x country x application segment, ±4 years) provides a statistical snapshot of the economic situation in more than 50 countries/regions worldwide as it relates to the market demand for BIM, PLM, GIS and Visualisation software applications, covering AEC, Geospatial, Manufacturing and other segments. Combining data from primary public sources and econometric forecasting, this model delivers a reliable basis for identifying target markets
