MARKET INTELLIGENCE
Key Market Changes and M&A
The engineering and industrial software market shifted gear in the first half of 2026. Four acquisitions, totalling well over $10 billion, point in the same direction: the major providers have largely finished consolidating the design layer and are now competing for what comes after it — operations, data, and compliance workflows.
Autodesk paid $3.6 billion for MaintainX, its largest acquisition to date, creating a new Operations Solutions division that connects engineering and manufacturing data with what happens on the factory floor after the model is built. Schneider Electric agreed to acquire Cognite for $3.1 billion, bringing agentic AI and a unified industrial data model into AVEVA. Siemens moved quickly in July, acquiring two EDA companies — Precision Innovations and Defacto Technologies — within 48 hours, both targeting the displacement of proprietary chip design tools by open-source and AI-native alternatives. Dassault Systèmes announced the acquisition of ArisGlobal for approximately $1.8 billion, an AI-native compliance platform processing over 12 million patient safety reports annually, extending 3DEXPERIENCE into regulated life sciences workflows.
| AUTODESK · MAY 2026 MaintainX $3.6B Largest deal in Autodesk history. Connects design, manufacturing, and operational data under Autodesk Operations Solutions. | SCHNEIDER / AVEVA · JUNE 2026 Cognite $3.1B Agentic AI and industrial data platform integrated into AVEVA CONNECT. |
| SIEMENS · JULY 2026 Precision Innovations + Defacto Technologies Undisclosed Two EDA deals in 48 hours — AI chip planning and automated SoC design. | DASSAULT SYSTÈMES · JULY 2026 ArisGlobal ~$1.8B AI-native life sciences compliance. 12M+ patient safety reports annually. Extends 3DEXPERIENCE into regulated industries. |
CAMBASHI BIM OBSERVATORY
BIM and AECO — UPDATED MARKET SIZE AND GROWTH FORECAST
New additions: Cambashi’s BIM Observatory has been updated this quarter to include Real Estate and Portfolio Planning within the BIM Operate segment. This addition reflects the growing role of built asset management in the BIM software market and adds approximately $6 billion to the total market size — changing both the current estimate and the forecast. The BIM market is now estimated at $32.6 billion in 2025, is forecast to reach approximately $36 billion in 2026 at a constant currency growth rate of +10.3%, and is expected to reach approximately $52 billion by 2030.
Data Management and Construct remain the fastest-growing segments at +12.9% and +10.3% respectively. The acquisition activity confirms the direction — providers are buying AI capability in compliance, data management, and site execution. EU public works mandates, UK BIM requirements, and Nordic BIM standards are accelerating adoption across the full AECO lifecycle, while AI is being embedded in generative design, quantity take-off, clash detection, and sustainability reporting.
BIM OBSERVATORY · 2026 REVENUE GROWTH FORECAST
| BIM DATA MANAGEMENT +12.9% Fastest-growing segment — clients investing in what happens after the model is built | BIM CONSTRUCT +10.3% Site execution and progress management driving adoption |
| BIM DESIGN +9.2% Core design tools remain growth-positive | BIM OPERATE +8.9 Steady growth as digital twin investment increases |

CAMBASHI’S VIEW
Chemicals Industry — Regional Divergence and Software Demand
The chemicals industry is undergoing significant regional divergence in how providers adopt engineering and industrial software. Emerging markets in Central Asia and Southeast Asia are expanding and modernizing rapidly, driving demand for enterprise software, regulatory compliance tools, and digital operations platforms. In established markets — North America, Western Europe, and parts of Asia Pacific — the focus has shifted to optimization, sustainability compliance, and AI-enabled process automation. Providers serving the chemicals sector need to understand not just market size, but where investment is being made and why it differs so markedly by region.

EMPLOYMENT & OCCUPATIONS VIEW
Engineering Software Users — Measuring the White Space
The chemicals industry illustrates a broader pattern visible across all sectors Cambashi tracks. The workforce is segmented across Managers and Supervisors prevalent in North America, Western Europe, and APAC; Professionals and semi-professionals including chemists, engineers, and researchers concentrated in innovation ecosystems globally; and AEC and Manufacturing Workers who form the backbone of plant operations. Automation and digitalization are shifting these roles towards higher-skilled, technology-driven positions across all regions — and as the skills baseline rises, the addressable market for providers expands with it. Chemicals industry intelligence, including occupation-level numbers by region, is available through Cambashi’s Industry Insights tool. For a more customized view — by geography, role, and capability — the Employment Observatory provides the full granular dataset.
Cambashi’s Employment Observatory captures this at scale across all industries it covers. Infrastructure engineers and technicians number 28.7 million globally. These are the professionals already inside the market — deep, defensible revenue, but a largely saturated base. The 500 million skilled construction workers sitting down the employment pyramid are a different story. A provider serving 200,000 of 28.7 million engineers has a very different growth conversation than one with a maximum of 2 million users. Knowing the size of that gap — by geography, by capability, and by industry vertical — is the foundation of a credible growth strategy. AI-enabled tools are also beginning to impact the construction workforce. Cambashi’s Employment Observatory enables users to estimate potential market size for seat-based software. Using this alongside Cambashi’s market data, providers can quantify exactly how much of their addressable market they are not yet serving – and more importantly where that potential market is.
GLOBAL ENGINEERING & INDUSTRIAL SOFTWARE — ESTIMATED USER BASE (2023)
