This week’s chart, which takes data from the Cambashi Industry Observatory, shows the expenditure on technical applications (BIM, CAD, CAM, CAE, GIS, PLM and Visualization) software in the High Tech industry in South Korea by sub-sector.

The lowdown
Much of the technical application spending in High Tech is on PLM and related design technologies, used to design the electronic products that the High Tech industry produces.
Korea is known throughout the world for its consumer electronics – TVs, smartphones, set-top boxes etc.; it would be natural to assume that the consumer electronics sub-sector would therefore be the biggest spender on PLM in High Tech in Korea. You’d be wrong.
In fact, medical device manufacture spends slightly more on PLM than consumer electronics does. Games development also spends more (but much of that technical application software expenditure would not really be PLM).
But the real dominant sector is electronic components. This one sub-sector spends more than 3 times as much as the next biggest sector in Korea. This is really the sector that Korea dominates – semiconductors, touchscreens, and printed circuit boards.
Conclusion
It’s easy to jump to conclusions about countries and sectors based on your own background knowledge. Sometimes those assumptions will be correct, other times they’ll be wrong. Often, you won’t even notice which was which, because you didn’t stop to check.
Evidence-based market planning can help to avoid those mistakes (even the ones you weren’t aware you made). Independent, consistent market data will ensure your decisions are based on facts, rather than assumptions.
About the Observatories
The Cambashi Market Observatories are a set of consistent and multi-perspective datasets for the technical software market. They provide detailed information on software spend by country, industry and product and the size of user communities, for a range of technical software application types, including:
- CAD, CAM, CAE
- PLM
- BIM
- AEC
- GIS
- IoT (software development tools)
Each data set provides a different way of measuring the use of software in industry, and can be used in combination to support business planning at global, regional and local levels. The methodology combines public and 3rd party data sources with Cambashi’s quantitative and qualitative research in each of these market views. Developed over 25 years, the combination of top down macroeconomic, industry detail and bottom up supply side (software provider) views leads to a highly consistent, multi-granular view of the market.
The Cambashi Industry Observatory breaks down global technical applications spend into over 100 industry classifications in over 50 countries.
