The unexpected countries ahead of Brazil and Russia for BIM and PLM spending

This week’s chart, which takes data from the Cambashi Country Observatory, shows the size of expenditure on technical applications (BIM, CAD, CAM, CAE, GIS, PLM and Visualization) software in mid-tier countries.

Chart of forecast market size for engineering software
Figure: Australia, Netherlands and Switzerland next contenders to hit the top ten for PLM BIM and GIS spending in 2016

The lowdown

Country level spending on BIM, CAD, PLM, and other design and engineering software, ranges from the low millions of  USD in a year to over USD7 billion in the US. The top ten spending countries also includes Germany, the UK, China and India – but which are the nations next in line?

Our data shows that spending on design and engineering software in the next top spending countries ranges from just short of USD150 million in Norway to over USD280 million in Australia, The Netherlands and Switzerland. There are another 57 regions covered in the Cambashi Country Observatory (77 in total) to help target the areas where spending on BIM, CAD, CAE, PLM, GIS and Visualisation software is growing or already high.

Conclusion

Our estimate of the spend in the next-best performing countries supports sales planning and market expansion beyond the long established markets of the top ten and into territories that are open to adopting the latest technologies but with perhaps fewer entrenched legacy providers.

The Observatories

The Cambashi Market Observatories are a set of consistent and multi-perspective datasets for the technical software market. They provide detailed information on software spend by country, industry and product and the size of user communities, for a range of technical software application types, including:

  • CAD, CAM, CAE
  • AEC, BIM
  • GIS
  • PLM
  • IoT (software development tools)

Each data set provides a different way of measuring the use of software in industry, and can be used in combination to support business planning at global, regional and local levels. The methodology combines public and 3rd party data sources with Cambashi’s quantitative and qualitative research in each of these market views. Developed over 25 years, the combination of top down macroeconomic, industry detail and bottom up supply side (software provider) views leads to a highly consistent, multi-granular view of the market.
